How to Develop Leadership Abilities

develop leadership abilitiesHow often have you met a successful leader who says one thing but then does something else?  Probably, not very often because it simply doesn’t work!

People learn better when the right example is shown!   It is of the utmost importance that you lead by example, especially if you’re in a position of authority.

Leading  by example will ensure these benefits:

 1. Respect.

When others see that you are complying with the principles that you teach, then you will ultimately gain their respect.

 2. Understanding of the principles.

It isn’t always enough to just impart principles to others. Without a good example to follow people can misunderstand what’s expected of them.

 3. Support of the principles based on results.

For example, if you’re teaching the importance of being honest and people see that honesty gains the trust of others, then it is likely that they will see the advantages of being honest themselves.

 4. Cohesion and cooperation.

This is particularly important for working together as a team. Everyone needs to be on the same page, so that offices and families run more cohesively.

The Results of Not Practicing What You Preach

If you try to teach certain life principles without setting an example then you’re bound to run into some or all of the following situations:

 • You may end up with a reputation as an ineffective leader.

• Those who you expect to comply may grow to resent you, especially if the principles that you’re teaching are a challenge to perform.

• Cases of rebellion will continue to grow as more and more people feel that they’re being dictated to instead of being led.

How to Develop Leadership Abilities and Lead by Example

For a start outline your expectations because at least they will know what the principles are. As they say, “Knowing is half the battle” but in this case, it’s the smaller half!

It may take a lot of effort to really walk the talk and practice the behaviors that you want others to emulate. However, you can soon get started practicing this positive principle on a daily basis with only a small amount of effort:

Start small and stick to your immediate circle of influence.

 • Start by giving yourself the opportunity to good belief systems and good morals on your immediate family and close friends.

 • Tackle each principle one at a time.

 • Work hard at it so that it becomes an integral part of your everyday life.

Once you’ve mastered one principle, move on to another one. You will experience a feeling of fulfillment when you can show others just what kind of actions, thoughts and behaviors contribute to a better, more wholesome outcome.

Learning good leadership skills is a lifelong journey. You may experience times when you fall below your own expectations but, if that happens, take the necessary steps to get back on track!  Do that and you will develop leadership abilities to make you a fine leader!
